Just in time for the holidays, and shown for the first time at RAP California that same weekend, the Artisan Drop-Off Aquarium marked something a little different for us. Most of what we build is about giving stores a cleaner, more professional way to display the same kind of tank everyone already knows. This one was about changing the angle people actually view the tank from.

A drop-off aquarium recesses the display below the surrounding floor or platform level, so instead of looking straight ahead or slightly down into a tank, your customer is looking into it from above and the side at once — closer to how you’d view a reef if you were actually snorkeling over it. It’s a small shift in physical design that ends up being a pretty big shift in how the tank feels to stand in front of.

Underneath that experience is the part we actually spend most of our time on: the filtration. Our system was built specifically to support this kind of layout, with versatile plumbing that adapts to a recessed footprint instead of forcing the same flat-rack filtration most stores are used to. That flexibility is what made it possible to give customers this new depth and viewing angle in the first place — the display only works if what’s running underneath it can actually keep up.

We brought the Drop-Off concept to RAP California to get it in front of the people who’d be running it day to day — store owners, hobbyists, the crowd that knows exactly what they’re looking at the second they see it. The reaction told us everything we needed to know. People didn’t just look at the tank. They stopped, leaned over the edge, and looked into it.

That’s the kind of reaction you build for. A drop-off aquarium gives your customers a way to look into a reef, not just at one — and that’s a different kind of impression to make.
